I was re-reading The Dream-Hunter and I remembered some sort of debate that argued over whether Nick was cursed during the events of Seize the Night or at the end of The Dream-Hunter.
In Seize the Night, Nick slept with Simi. When Ash found out, he blew a gasket and cursed Nick to kill himself saying "if I were you, I would kill myself to save me the trouble of doing it later". At the time, it was seen that this was what sealed Nick's fate, though the events of that night also played a part. In order for him to get his act of vengance against the person who killed his mother, he had to be dead. So he shot himself.
In The Dream-Hunter, M'Adoc gets brought to Ash at Kyrian's house after he freaked out over the situation with Arik and Geary. Nick was leaving to go walk his mother home from work, Kyrian comments that Nick is going to be the death of her one day, but Ash, know Nick's devotion to his mother rebuttled, "I'd be the death of her before Nick would". Ash then felt as if a chain of events was set in motion and it was going to screw him over at some point.
With that, it makes the situation with Nick a lot more open to interpretation. Did Ash curse Nick and Cherise six years before their deaths? Did he curse Nick in Seize the Night? Or was it just a really really messed up chain of events brought on by choices being interlinked?
